Ihantla (Donator/George Ferguson)

1905-1979

George Ferguson, the son of Nupa Kikte and Pte Sanwin, was born at Wood Mountain in 1905. As a young man he broke horses and participated in the Wood Mountain and Assiniboia rodeos. He was exceptionally strong and became an expert at the wild horse race competition. He also competed in bronc riding, calf roping and rope spinning.
In 1927 George Ferguson married Nellie Brown and they made their home on the Wood Mountain First Nations reserve. After Nellie died in 1930 he stayed on the reserve until 1960 when he moved to Assiniboia.

All his life George had a special interest in Lakota celebrations. He used to sing and play the drums at pow-wows and he was often called on to judge the dancing.
