The continuing growth of the economy and the population in Canada West (Ontario) increased pressure for expanded settlement. The Palliser Expedition of 1857–1860, under the direction of Captain John Palliser, set out to explore the Canadian West to determine the suitability of different regions for cultivation and settlement. Its findings — that this part of the country consisted of vast tracts of fertile and arable land — helped to promote the development and settlement of the Canadian West.
