The Act of Union came into effect on February 10, 1841, uniting Canada under a single government and legislature — the Province of Canada. Before this political union, the country was divided between Upper and Lower Canada. As this boundary marker shows, the old division persisted. While it was erected in the 1860s, it still bears the old names (Upper Canada and Lower Canada).
